Building a website that is exactly what you want and has all of the components you believe will impress customers is not easy. Your website needs to make searching and buying as easy as possible for your visitors and sometimes it is best to seek help on your website design. You may want to seek out a professional web design company to help you design your web pages so you can get started online. However, web design companies are notorious for quoting one thing and billing something significantly higher. What you need to do is know how you can avoid getting ripped off before you ever do so you can avoid the situation if at all possible. Read the following suggestions to help you avoid getting ripped off.

Tip #1 - Details

A very important thing you need to do when it comes to hiring a web design company is to lay out all of the important details. Even though your website has not been designed yet, you need to have a plan of exactly what you want your site to do and make note of any important details that you want completed. Once you know exactly what you want, your web design company will better be able to give you a quote.

Tip #2 - References

Talk to friends, co-workers, read blogs, and basically research web design companies every way you possibly can. The reason for this is references speak for the company and if someone had a good experience, they can tell you why as well as how much they paid. However, price is not always a good gauge. Ask what kind of site they had built, if it is similar to yours then it’s a reference worth considering. On the other hand, if it is a completely different kind of site, let’s say really basic and you need something complex, then you should look for other references.

Tip #3 - Monitor

When the design team takes over, monitor what they are doing so you can change things mid-stride rather than after they have already completed the project. Catching things before completion will cost you less money so stay on top of what is taking place and provide input along the way.

Tip #4 - Ask

Always ask questions. If the web designer casually mentions a particular element that he feels would work well with your site, don’t assume that it is for the same price. This could cost you dearly, so find out if this element is something you really need or even want before you allow the designer to add something.

Hiring a web designer can be a big nightmare if you do not know what you need and do not check out the quality of work they do before hiring them. Be careful, do your homework before hiring a designer, and always know what is going on as your project is being completed.

Okay, one of the reasons why posting has been light on this blog is because we have been busy. My wife and I have also had our first child (well, two years ago) and to be honest, our work has become less innovative in terms of doing cool new things and more iterative, as in we have been applying a lot of the cool things we learned and developed over the last few years.

This happened because we changed our business model from agency style to "plug us into your operations and we will be your dev crew" style.

Anyways, every once in a while we like to take stock and see where we may be able to gain some time so as to try and work in our next direction or new model, whatever that may be. The applications that we use are often places where we can find cool new stuff and gain time.

What things have you done to find extra time? Please, share below!

Here are three things that, in the last year point five have helped us find some extra time.

  1. Navicat: we moved all of the bits of PHPmyAdmin accesses over to navicat at about the end of 2007 and this was an excellent move. Tonnes of time gained.
  2. TeamViewer: for quick support and desktop sharing with remote staff.
  3. Buying a netbook and using Maxivista and Ultramon: adds two new monitors to my existing setup. I now have a 4 monitor two computer setup which allows me to not only have two more monitors but I can also have open two versions of many of the apps that I use (useful for multitasking with teams etc.)
  4. Moving simpler client sites to WordPress: now that it has one step upgrades and almost doesn't require the use of an FTP client to get up and running on some hosts.
  5. Dictation Software: I have been using Dragon Naturally Speaking for writing some course and blog materiel lately (pre-writing for my new blog). I find this is saving me a load of time and I am getting more written then ever before.

So what solution have you implemented lately to buy you some extra time?

So, what's in a website design anyway? And, how do you get a design that is appealing to the broad and varied tastes of all those Internet surfers out there? This is critical. Your website design is the first impression you make on your customers and visitors. There are a few sites in my favorites and bookmarks that I consider poorly designed. 4. Build It And Build It Cheap! By Brian Hawkins
There are several very good reasons why you should consider building your own web site versus having someone do it for you. It's more cost efficient, you can make it much larger in content, you are more involved in how you want the pages to look, and I have actually enjoyed learning the dos and don'ts of website profiling. I have run into some definite don'ts as I thrashed my way through building the few that I have needed , but I envy the professionals that get paid to make websites. Although…
